Hint: This band was a successful Atlanta group that broke up, then saw its EP cross the pond to England where it enjoyed enough success to cause US labels to sit up and take notice, and it wound up with a #2 hit on Billboard as a result. This clip represents the Athens debut of that song, and the thing I like about it is the lead singer's comments to the crowd, which give it an indelible Athens flavor. Being featured in a recent automobile commercial has rekindled some interest in the band, whose members have gone on to a variety of careers since its demise about four years after this clip was recorded at the Watt on Broad in January of 1986. Good luck everybody!!
Week # 211 Oh Ok performing "Strange Town"
October 3, 2014
Winner: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK. Co-winners: Chris Razz, Watkinsville, GA; Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Robby McMahan, Gainesville, GA; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Kenneth Rogers, Atlanta, GA; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC; Craig Williams, Portland, OR.
Hint: This band was an Athens favorite for several years in the mid 80's, which wasn't easy considering the personnel changes it went through. All along, however, was the presence of two ladies who became synonymous with the name of the band and one didn't envision the band onstage without linking it to these two women. While enjoying local success and a warm reception in NYC they never quite hit the big time and eventually went separate ways. Good luck everybody!!
Week # 212 Dash Rip Rock performing "Roadrunner"
October 10, 2014
Winner: Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC. Co-winners: Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL; Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Chris Rasmussen, Watkinsville, GA; Dan Matthews, Watkinsville, GA; Jennifer Armour, San Diego, CA; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC; Ken Rogers, Atlanta, GA; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Dana Downs, Athens, GA.
Hint: This was a band from the Crescent City that came to the Watt on Broad not long before its demise. They put on a very spirited set to a small but enthusiastic crowd and left a positive imprint on the Athens listening audience. They have been touring and performing since then, this summer celebrating their 30th anniversary as an overnight music sensation (sic). Their career includes more than a dozen albums and membership in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Good luck everybody!!!
Week # 213 Body Electric performing "Six Feet Under"
October 17, 2014
Winner: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK. Co-winners: Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR.
Hint: This was the band I went to work for after I left the Watt in February of 1990. All except the front man had played in another band that came through the Watt and when they heard I was available they came knocking on my door. We worked together for about two years, making trips to New York and playing in Athens mostly at O'Malley's down by the river. The front man had a roommate who helped us out with equipment and we became close friends during those two years. I recently learned that he succumbed to cancer not long ago and we'd like to dedicate this episode of Band of the Week in his memory. He was a good friend to have around when we were in Greenwich Village, since he served in the 10th Special Forces, the Arctic Green Berets. This one's for you Lyle, good luck everybody!!
Week # 214 Chris Stamey performing "Face in the Crowd"
October 24, 2014
Winner: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK. Co-winners: Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Liam Clemson, SC.
Hint: This band we featured way back in our early weeks and it's been overlooked since then. It was one that performed at the Watt on Clayton version1.0, at the time I lived in the space above the bathroom. It was one of the very few bands that Doug made a guarantee to have them come play, and that was based on its popularity within the Athens music community at the time. As it turned out only about a dozen people showed up, and Doug was seething when time to settle up rolled around. I'll never forget the look on Doug's face when the front man, whose name was also the band's, asked about their "five hot meals" that had been listed on the rider. Good luck everybody!!
Week # 215 Chickasaw Mudd Puppies performing "White Dirt"
October 31, 2014
Winner: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Co-winners: Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Chris Rasmussen, Watkinsville, GA; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; James Lumb, Alanta, GA; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC.
Hint: This was an extremely popular local group that drew packed house crowds at our place on Clayton version 2.0. Consisting of UGA students who met in Athens and decided to start a "band", the two of them enjoyed bountiful local and regional success for several years, then went their respective ways upon graduation. They recently reformed and played shows in Athens and at SXSW after adding a third performer to the lineup. Good luck everybody!!
Week # 216 Mojo & Skid performing "Jesus at MacDonald's"
November 1, 2014
Winner: Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Co-winners: Chris Hartstonge,
London UK; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU;
Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire;
Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; James Lumb, Atlanta, GA; Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Robby McMahan, Gainesville, GA; Jennifer Armour, San Diego, CA; Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL.
Hint: This was another of the many duos who played the Watt, this one appearing at the Watt on Broad while touring in support of their first record, released in 1985. They enjoyed some commercial success before they broke up in 1989, with the front man going on to a solo career that includes some acting and radio shows on Sirius. We'll accept the front man's name as a correct answer, with 5 bonus points going to everyone who identifies his sidekick. Good luck everybody!!
Week # 217 Is Ought Gap performing "Her Peace"
November 14, 2014
Winner: Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Craig Williams, Portland, OR; Jennifer Armour, San Diego, CA; Mike Huff, Powder Springs, GA; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC.
Hint: This band was a popular local group that always drew an appreciative crowd and it looked like they might make it to the next level when they put together a record but it was never released. Recently there was a reunion of the band and they performed in town with most of the original members, much to the delight of the old timers like me who remembered the lyrics of almost every song. Good luck everybody!!
Week # 218 Brian Brain performing "Sex"
November 21, 2014
Winner: Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Co-winners: Craig Williams, Portland, OR; Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL; Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; Ken Rogers, Atlanta, GA; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR.
Hint: This band was the project of an English drummer who also performed in several post-punk bands of renown, including Public Image Ltd. and Nine Inch Nails. They came through the Watt on Broad (40Watt Uptown) in the summer of '86 and the result was the tape from which this clip was derived. This performance was probably as close as Athens ever got to Anglo-industrial music during the 1980s. Good luck everybody!!!
Week # 219 the Normaltown Flyers performing "So Far Away from Me"
November 28, 2014
Winner: Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire. Co-winners: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Dan Matthews, Watkinsville, GA; Que Beedoo, Cincinnati, OH; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC; Kip Shepherd, Huntsville, AL; Steve Fleming, Tourmakeady, IR; Chris Razz, Watkinsville, Ga.
Hint: This band was composed of some of Athens' most accomplished musicians, performing with a core that gave the band its name and that was a legend in town for many years. They were a staple in Normaltown on Wednesday nights for decades, occupying the "stage" at a bar and grill whose name made it into more than one song about Athens. Doug was a huge fan and he did his utmost to talk them into coming to the Watt on Broad on Saturday nights, but they only satisfied his request on a few occasions due to their busy schedules outside of music. We're featuring them tonight because Wiz Audio is working with one of them this evening. Good luck everybody!!
