Hint: This band was the earliest I worked with, when I came to Athens in April of 1980 to record a demo tape for them in their practice space, which was the old B-52s practice room in the back of the Morton Theater. Ironically, it was about a week after they played at a birthday party in the old Episcopal church down by the river on Oconee Street. That bill was shared with a band called the Side Effects and another, unnamed band that went on to fame and fortune... I became their soundman that November after a certain female vocalist left the band (and me) and the five of us had a common cause afterward. They went through a name change, which is reflected in the two tracks presented: one clip is so obvious that Helen Keller could answer it correctly, and I'll leave it to you to identify the name the band used in the other clip. We'll award five points for each correct answer for each clip. This one goes out to a dear departed friend and terrific musician, Jimmy Dortmund, rest in peace Jimmy. Good luck everybody, and thank you for making the first three years of Band of the Week such a pleasure to look forward to every Friday, and congratulations to the three winners of season three at PattheWiz.com, Andy, Chris and Tim.
Week # 157 the Butthole Surfers performing "Dum Dum"
September 20, 2013
Winner: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK. Co-winners: Darryl White, Jennifer Griffith, Athens, GA; Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Monty Greene, Dubai, UAE; Maureen McLaughlin, Athens, GA; Que BeeDoo, Cincinnati, OH; Joel Suttles, Asheville, NC; Mike Huff, Powder Springs, GA; Craig Williams. Portland, OR; Ken Rogers, Atlanta, GA.
Hint: This band formed in San Antonio in the late 70s and vacillated between there and southern California throughout its career, which has lasted at least until just a couple of years ago. Although they have been through more than twenty members during those years, including one with connections to several Athens bands, the core trio has been together since 1983. The peak of their success came with a release in 1996, which featured a single that climbed to #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart while the album reached #31 on Billboard's 200. Their musical style has been described as "experimental rock, alternative rock, hardcore punk, neo-psychedelia and noise rock". I tend to prefer the latter myself...Good luck everybody!!
Week # 158 Silent Partner performing "Honest Work"
September 27, 2013
Winner: Andy Johnson, Athens, GA. Co-winners: Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Chris Rasmussen, Athens, GA; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Larry Tenner, Athens, GA.
Hint: This band evolved through several configurations in Athens, beginning in the mid 70's and continuing throughout the 80's. It consisted of a core duo who wrote most of their songs and when I came to Athens in 1980 they were the first job I got after I recorded the demo tape for Turtlebay in the old B 52's practice space. Not long after that one of the pair moved to north Georgia and the remaining member continued to play and record in his house on Prince Avenue in Normaltown. The configuration in this clip included a couple of friends who joined him in opening for Glenn Phillips and is the last recording I made from the 40 Watt Uptown. Good luck everybody, and for extra credit we'll award 5 points to the first person who can identify the front man in this episode!
Week # 159 Stiv Bators and the Dead Boys performing "Ain't It Fun" October 4, 2013
Winner: Chris Hartstonge, London, UK; Co-winners: Andy Johnson, Athens, GA; Tim Abbott, Skipton, Yorkshire; Mike Huff, Powder Springs, GA; Darryl White, Melbourne, AU; Monty Greene, Dubai, UAE; Maureen McLaughlin, Athens, GA; Que Beedoo,
Cincinnati, OH; Craig Wiliams, Portland, OR; Liam O'Hara, Clemson, SC.
Hint: This band was one of the standard bearers of the punk rock music movement of the late 1970s after moving to New York from their native Cleveland. They became a regular feature at CBGBs and released several records, along with appearing in films that espoused punk in general. They performed at the Watt on Broad after reforming in the late 80s and made news in Athens when the front man was arrested during the show because he had gone on a driving tour after sound check and rammed their high-top rental van into the overhang at the UGA Law School, then drove away. Less than three years afterward he would be dead after being struck by a taxi in Paris. At his request his ashes were spread on Jim Morrison's grave. We want the full name including the front man's and the band's, as they were billed when they played. Good luck everybody!!
